There is such a juxtaposition of character here, meaning the village people who most certainly would have found seeing a balloon in the air an amazing feat and being in the balloon looking downward into the village where the humans appear as crows. Is it the traditional weather to be hazy or is the coal man acknowledging (or simplifying) the change in the ceiling because of burning the coal?

I am always struck by the precision of English writers in the yesteryear. Proper is the word I think of. In this instance, there is something wonderous about sharing the landscape in a letter that readers of the paper will be able to read or hear. For Williamson, the ride was surely an adventure.

I think the white vapour Williamson refers to in the town of Cockermouth (about 5 miles away from our little village) is from the factories, mills etc.

We love the ‘proper’ way William writes, it’s a fascinating insight into his character and was great fun to record and produce with our friend, Mark.
